This also lets you define chord "shortcuts," one-letter abbreviations for longer chord names ("J" for "Maj7" etc.). Have you found a chord that Band-in-a-Box doesn't recognize? If so, add it to the chord shortcuts file, and Band-in-a-Box will allow you to type in that chord in the future. They also have C2 as an alternate name for Cadd9 - 1 3 5 9Īs for Band-in-a-Box, here's how you program a sus2 chord (from the "Chord List" help file) but I'm not sure if it can really tell the difference between a C2 and a Csus2 I looked on and they do use a sus2 chord formation for a 1 2 5 chord. They automatically convert a Cadd9 to a C2 (C-E-G-D), and they don't recognize a Csus2 at all. P.S., just did a quick test on Band-in-a-Box. Does it sound like a standard tune, surrounded by chords with 7ths, 9ths and 13ths in them? Put the 3rd in. Does it sound droned and open? Leave out the 3rd. When you start to hit some of these lesser-used symbols, you have to listen to the music for the context. So, for example, in the D2 above 2-0-0-0, while the mandolin isn't playing a 3rd, there may be another instrument playing it. Some of the ambiguity in the mandolin voicings above comes from the fact that we quite often don't play all the notes in chords, especially chords with colors and extensions. But they don't directly address the 3rd.Īlso, a sus generally resolves downward, not upward (a retardation resolves upward), so the missing note in a Dsus2 should be the root, not the 3rd, so I'm not sure the problem is made any clearer with the alternative term there. The problem they're trying to solve is adding the 2nd (aka 9th) to the chord without adding the 7th. There is a little ambiguity with these chords. Perhaps there is some ambiguity in the terms C2 and D2? Can that notation represent either a sus2 or an add9? The second example (C2) 0030 is the 5 9 1 and 3 which I would call a Cadd9 since it has a 3rd. The first example you gave (D2) 2000 is the 5 1 5 and 2 which I would call a Dsus2 since it has no 3rd. I'm a bit confused by the terminology C2 and D2.
